Nowadays to learn muay boran is much easier than a few years ago: being a growing business, many schools have updated their training programs to accommodate the new demand and new schools have popped up too. But if you wish to learn muay boran in depth, the best place is the official. government-sponsored Muay Thai Conservation Center of Thailand (M.C.C.T.). Here the Senior Instructor is Ajaarn Suphan, Golden Mongkol, at the moment the most knowledgeable man in Thailand on everything related to muay boran. Listening to Ajaarn Suphan explaining the strategies for fighting different kinds of opponents using different body weapons unveils how different muay boran really is from the muay thai we all know. Ajaarn Suphan's teachings always combine history, theory and strategy with effective physical training. This is why learning this noble art under his guidance is not merely practicing obscure mee mai and old-styled elbow/knee strikes, but it's more about understanding the psychology of a warrior and being able to choose the best fighting strategies and all body weapons. As every opponent has a different style, it is essential to spot and assess correctly his strengths and weaknesses and act accordingly. To be able to quick decide how to approach an opponent, to exploit his weak points and to protect against his strongest skills is what muay boran is about, and this is much more important than merely learning a few choreographic moves trying ti become Tony Jaa.

Together with Grandmaster Woody of M.C.C.T., Ajaarn Suphan has produced a little book "The Art of Muay Thai (Boran)", self-printed in limited edition in Bangkok. Rich in glossy pictures explaining how to move correctly, the book is really a practical manual about the basics of muay boran. The writen parts are about the origins of muay boran and the fighting history of Siam, with many rare old pictures.

In the past 3 years Ajaarn Suphan has been teaching in I.K.M.A. affiliated schools worldwide, from U.K. to Uzbekistan. So if you don't catch him at the M.C.C.T. in Bangkok, chances are he's abroad teaching muay boran to foreign students. See some of his workshops here:
